Our club is involved in a variety of projects that involve fundraising, community service, and assisting children locally and worldwide. See below joint service project involving two (2 of our SLPs (Metea Valley HS Key Club & Hill Middle School Builders Club). The project was held in conjunction with Naperville Park District and as part of Key Club Week 2016. Key Club is the largest high school service organization in the world and is a member of Kiwanis family. During November Key Clubs were urged to celebrate the entire family of Kiwanis by getting the whiole gang involved.

Project Eliminate Global Fundraiser:

What are we raising money for? To vaccinate women worldwide against tetanus.

Is the project working? While tetanus (lockjaw) is almost unheard of developed countries it is still prevalent in 23 developing countries (it’s been “eliminated” in 36 other developing countries).

What is tetanus? Tetanus spores live in the ground everywhere and children born in unsanitary conditions (dirt floors, unsterilized instruments) risk infection through the umbilical cord. The tetanus toxin attacks the baby’s brain and central nervous system. The child goes into seizures causing the body to go rigid (hence the term lockjaw). The baby screams with pain if held and cannot tolerate light or sound. An agonizing death usually occurs in 5-7 days. Worldwide, one (1) baby dies every nine (9) minutes, 60,000 per year.

So what;s the solution? The solution is simple and not expensive. A series of three (3) doses of tetanus vaccine provides immediate and continuing protection to the mother and her future babies. Those three (3) shots cost a total of $1.80. Kiwanis has partnered with UNICEF in this project to protect 61 million women and babies. Kiwanis International has pledged to raise $110 million dollars over the next five (5) years to help pay for the vaccine. UNICEF has the worldwide infrastructure to actually administer the vaccine. Our Naperville club has pledged to raise $62,250 for the project. The money our club raises will save almost 35,000 lives.

Loaves & Fishes:

On May 10,2014 sixteen Kiwanians teamed up with the Naperville mail carriers for their "Stamp out Hunger" food drive. Loaves and Fishes food pantry recieved a record 80,000 pounds of food as a result of this effort.

Volunteers work with the Naperville Park District on clean up and beautification projects at Veterans Park.
